Closer vs sales rep — what is actually different

A closer specialises in one stage: converting qualified conversations into signed deals. A sales rep usually owns the whole cycle, including prospecting and pipeline building, and is normally an employee on a salary plus commission.

You bring the leads or pipeline — our closers work them. Closing engagements run on your existing leads. Need the leads generated and meetings booked too? That's a separate service — see appointment setting and lead generation.

    Scope is the real difference

A sales rep is a generalist across the funnel: find prospects, qualify them, present, negotiate, close, sometimes manage the account afterwards.

A closer is a specialist at the end of it. Given qualified calls they convert at a higher rate than a generalist, because that is the only skill they have practised at volume. Give them an empty calendar and they are the wrong hire.

    • Rep: prospecting, qualifying, presenting, closing, sometimes account management
    • Closer: discovery or sales call, objections, proposal, follow-up, close
    • Rep: usually employed, salary plus commission
    • Closer: often contracted, weighted to or entirely commission

    How the pay models differ

A rep's salary is a fixed cost that continues through a slow quarter. A closer on a commission-weighted arrangement only costs money when revenue arrives, and takes a larger share of it when it does.

Neither is cheaper in the abstract. One buys predictability, the other buys variability, and the right choice depends on whether your cash-flow can absorb a quiet month.

Which one do you actually need?

If nobody is generating conversations, a rep or a setter is the gap. If conversations happen and too few convert, or the founder cannot take any more calls, the gap is closing capacity.

Hiring a closer to fix a demand problem is the most expensive diagnostic mistake in this space, and it is common.

    • Pipeline is empty → prospecting capacity (rep or setter)
    • Calls happen, conversion is poor → closer
    • Founder is the bottleneck on calls → closer
    • Long multi-stakeholder enterprise cycles → experienced rep or senior closer
