Commission only sales jobs — how the model really works

A commission only sales job pays no base salary; you earn a percentage of the revenue you close. Done on the right offer it pays more per deal than a salaried role, and on the wrong offer it pays nothing — which is why the offer matters more than the percentage.

Check the offer before you check the split

Most people evaluating a commission-only role ask about the percentage first. That is the wrong first question. A generous split on an offer with no demand, no proof and no marketing behind it is worth nothing.

Ask instead: how many deals has this offer closed already, what does a typical deal cost, how many qualified calls will reach my calendar each week, and who has closed it successfully before me?

    • Proof the offer has already sold, repeatedly
    • Deal value and the commission percentage in writing
    • Where the leads come from and who books them
    • Expected qualified call volume per week
    • Who owns follow-up on undecided prospects

Why companies use commission-only — and what that means for you

Commission-only shifts risk from the business to the salesperson. In exchange, the honest version of the deal gives you a materially higher rate per sale and no cap.

It becomes exploitative when the company also expects you to generate your own pipeline, supply your own tooling and wait months for the offer to become sellable. Those roles are worth walking away from.

    How we structure it

We place closers and setters onto offers that have already proven they sell, publish the split and deal size before you accept, and keep terms per-offer rather than locking you into one client.

If an offer stops converting for reasons outside your control, we move you rather than letting you burn a quarter on it.
